DMZ Note: This trip was done in 2001. We also made a one-day excursion from Hué to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). DMZ consists of an area about 10 km wide and located around the Ben Hai river. This river forms the split between South Vietnam and North Vietnam. We bought bus tickets to Hoi An in Saigon. These are “open tickets” where you decide your final destination of the bus trip. On the way to your destination the bus stops in different cities and you can stay there for several days. Note: This trip was made in 2001 Hué has about 250000 citizens and is known as the old imperial town. Here 13 Emperors have reigned during 1802 to 1945. The largest places of interest in the area are the old Emperor tombs. In November 1999 the whole town was below water when a huge flood hit some parts of Vietnam. Saigon, or Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) has 9 millions citizens. Add to that about 2.5 million of mopeds/motorcycles. One advantage of that is that the city is not as polluted as for example Bangkok. The traffic is very hectic. To go from one side of the street to the other side is a big achievement. You can not stay and wait for someone to stop and let you pass, you must slowly go forward without stopping or going back! […]
During our big Asia trip in 2001 we completed three different school visits. These were our objectives to visiting schools in Malaysia/Borneo, Thailand and Singapore: To visit students and teachers in their everyday life situation at schools in Malaysia/Borneo, Thailand and Singapore and set up a network for long-term and improved contacts.The connections are made especially with children and school personnel in elementary schools in the above mentioned countries.
